Group Work and Reflective Practice
I offer facilitated reflective practice groups for organisations, teams and professionals working in emotionally demanding, relational or psychologically complex environments.
My background includes more than 15 years’ experience in mental health and psychological practice, including extensive work with therapeutic communities, multidisciplinary teams and group processes. I bring a psychodynamic, psychoanalytic and attachment-informed perspective, alongside an understanding of trauma, organisational dynamics and neuroscience.
Reflective practice groups create a protected space for staff to think about the emotional impact of their work, the relationships that develop around it, and the pressures that can otherwise become difficult to notice.
In demanding services, teams can easily become focused on responding, managing risk and getting through the day. Over time, this can leave less space to think about what the work is doing to the people carrying it.
A well-facilitated reflective practice group gives teams the opportunity to slow things down and consider what may be happening beneath the surface.
This can include:
-
the emotional impact of complex or challenging work
-
relationships between staff, clients and wider systems
-
trauma, anxiety and distress within the work
-
repeated patterns of conflict, dependency or avoidance
-
professional boundaries
-
team dynamics, splitting and communication difficulties
-
uncertainty, frustration, helplessness or emotional fatigue
-
the impact of organisational change and pressure
The purpose is not to judge practice or provide another layer of management oversight. It is to create a thoughtful, confidential space where staff can step back from immediate pressures, make sense of their responses and develop a deeper understanding of the relational dynamics around them.
Reflective practice can support greater emotional resilience, clearer boundaries, stronger team relationships and more thoughtful decision-making. It can also help organisations maintain psychologically informed ways of working when services are under pressure.
Groups can be arranged as ongoing regular sessions or as part of a wider programme of staff development, clinical support or organisational consultation.
Therapy Groups
Alongside organisational reflective practice, I also offer psychotherapy and therapeutic groups.
Group therapy provides an opportunity to understand ourselves through our relationships with others. Difficulties such as anxiety, trauma, low self-worth, isolation and repeated relational patterns can often become visible within the group in ways that are harder to recognise elsewhere.
Within a carefully facilitated group, members can explore trust, closeness, conflict, vulnerability and the ways previous experiences continue to shape present relationships.
My role is to create and maintain a safe and thoughtful environment in which members can become curious about themselves and one another, without being pressured to disclose more than feels manageable.
Over time, group work can support a deeper understanding of longstanding patterns, greater confidence in relationships and the possibility of developing more flexible and fulfilling ways of relating to others.
